We're shopping for land in Hungary and while prices are relatively low, when compared to those in Scotland, it's possible that our budget will only stretch to a 1-, or 2-acre plot. Ideally we're looking for 4 or 5 acres minimum however 1 or 2 acres will be suitable.
With this in mind I'm collecting information and learning how to "survive" on smaller plots.

We've had problems with slugs. We planted parsley, it sprouted well and then overnight the slugs ate all the shoots. All of them. We did not act quickly enough to protect the parsley shoots. This time we will take multiple measures to stop the slugs - crushed egg shells, a beer trap and possibly some copper wire around the planted areas.
Update: I put down crushed egg shells around each of the sprouting lettuce and radish....

I plan to implement a similar system when we move to Hunagry. As I've discussed previously provision of sufficient water, for domestic & agricultural use, will be a major issue for us once we're there. We will need to employ any and all techniques that allow us to conserve, re-use, reclaim and use efficiently all water that we have. We'll use a combination of a rainwater-collection, grey-water and efficient irrigation systems in addition to developing practices...
